AKLAN – The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Aklan District is ready to build another bridge to boost the economy and tourism of Kalibo.
DPWH district engineer Roberto Cabigas said DPWH would allocate P270 million to build another bridge adjacent to the existing Kalibo bridge.
He noted that the existing Kalibo Bridge is a century-old structure connecting the western district with the eastern district.
It is considered a major route bound for Boracay Island coming from the Kalibo International Airport, Iloilo and nearby provinces, he added.
For several years, Cabigas noted that the existing bridge had undergone retrofitting and renovation while commuters are worried that it would give way soon.
Cabigas said the DPWH plans to implement a one-way traffic system once the new bridge is completed.
In the long term, we are planning to further strengthen the old bridge capability to fit the increasing traffic concerns," said Cabigas.*PNA
