Colorful costumes and props as well as execution of stunts made newly-formed Tribu Panayanon of Iloilo City National High School get their much-desired win in the Dinagyang Ati-ati tribe competition, defeating nine other tribes yesterday.
The tribe’s presentation was choreographed by Rommel Flogen, choreographer of Dinagyang and Aliwan Festivals’ Hall of Famer Tribu Pan-ay.
Though it only took them less than three months to prepare, Flogen, fellow choreographer Alfredo Amado and the tribe members were able to perfectly deliver the story of the struggle of the natives against the ‘Bakunawa,’ a mythical sea creature akin to a dragon.Â
The tribe won P175,000 cash prize plus additional P50,000 from Mayor Edward Hagedorn and P20,000 from former Las Piñas Congressman Cynthia Villar.Â
Among their special awards were: Best Headdress, Best Choreographer and Best in Performance for the Opening Salvo.Â
First runner-up is Tribu Ilonganon of Jalandoni Memorial National High School. They received P150,000 cash plus P40,000 from Hagedorn and P15,000 from Villar. They also received the Best in Costume Designer, Best Musical Director, Best in Costume and Best Music awards.
Second runner-up is Tribu Salognon of Jaro National High School. They 125,000 cash plus P20,000 from Hagedorn and P10,000 from Villar. Salognon was also adjudged Best in Street Dancing and Best in Discipline.
Adjudged third and fourth runners-up were Tribu Milagrosa of Zarraga and Tribu Atub-Atub of Atub-Atub of Brgy. Veterans Village who received cash awards of P100,000 and P75,000 respectively.Â
The other competing tribes were Tribu Buntatalan-on from Brgy. Buntatala, Jaro and Buntatala National High School and barangay tribes Pag-asa of Brgy. Pali, Mandurriao; Molave of  Brgy. Rizal-Estanzuela; Aninipay of Don Esteban Lapuz; Angola of Brgy. Ed Ganzu, City Proper.Â

PERFORMING REAL AETAS
Aside from the 10 competing tribes, another anticipated number in the event was the performance of Tribu Miro.
The group, composed of the Nagpana Minorities Association are real aetas from the towns of the Anilao and Barotac Viejo.
While other tribes competed in colors; from their glamorous costumes to props, the original tribe showed their real skin color and their way of living through dancing.

KASADYAHAN WINNERSÂ
Meanwhile, retaining their title as the defending champion for the Regional Cultural Kasadyahan Festival is Tribu Salakayan of Miagao National High School.Â
Salakayan, defeating 11 other competing tribes received P150,000 cash and trophy. They also received minor awards including; Best Choreographer, Best Choreography and Performance.
Two first-timers in the Kasadyahan competition were adjudged first and second runners-up; Tribu Kaing of Leon National High School and Tribu Bayluhay of San Joaquin.Â
Tribu Kaing received P120,000 and minor awards Best Musical Director, Best in Costume and Best in Music.Â
Meanwhile, Tribu Bayluhay won P100,000 and was adjudged Best in Street Dancing.Â
Tribu Padagyaw of Dumarao, Capiz was adjudged third runner-up and got P75,000 while Tribu Milagrosa was adjudged fourth runner-up and got P50,000.Â
Other competing tribes for the Kasadyahan Festival were Hugyaw Kansilay of Silay Negros Occidental, Olalong of Cabalum Western College, Pahinis de Lawaan of Lawaan, Antique; Mandaragat of Antique National High School and San Jose de Buenavista, Antique; Saludan of Tigbauan, Hubon Saranggola of Guimaras, Hubon Binagtong of Nueva Valencia, Guimaras and Hugyaw of St. Therese MTC Colleges, La Fiesta Site.Â
Both Tribu Panayanon and Tribu Salakayan will compete for the Aliwan Festival on April 11 to 13 in Manila. Currently, Iloilo City, represented by Tribu Pan-ay of Fort San Pedro National High School is the defending champion.*
