Residents living in communities near high-voltage transmission lines were told to always observe safety precaution, especially during kite-flying activities common this summer.
In a press release, the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines said there are occurrences of electrocution during summer due to kite-flying enjoyed not only by kids but by some adults as well.
The NGCP said residents living near transmission lines should not risk their lives by flying kites near the transmission facilities.
Moreover, the NGCP noted the cases of entangled kite strings in the conductors and insulators of the switchyard, and said "these occurrences may cause the tripping of the transmission lines, which are experienced as brownouts or power interruptions."
The NGCP also enjoined the public to avoid kite-flying near its high-voltage structures and discouraged the public to engage in other dangerous practices such as building fires, planting trees, construction of houses and installation of antennas hear transmission facilities.*
