Jamora quits race for health reasons

E-mail Print PDF

Despite having a strong chance to regain his seat at the City Council, incumbent Councilor David Jamora withdrew his candidacy to take care of his health and spend more time with his family.

In a press conference held yesterday at the GYG Headquarters, Jamora announced he withdrew his certificate of candidacy from the Commission on Elections (Comelec) last February 14.

He disclosed that almost three weeks ago, he was diagnosed with hypertension urgency which is considered symptom of mild stroke.

He said his doctors advised that he stay away from strenuous activities including campaign sorties.

He said that stepping down is not just a personal decision but also for his family. He also revealed that the illness runs in the family, adding he has been taking medical supplements for two years now.

Despite his withdrawal, Jamora vowed to help his constituents in his own capacity, particularly, continuing his environmental advocacy.

“Wala gid ako nasilaw sa position,” he stressed.

“Palangga ko gid ang syudad sang Iloilo kag ang mga tawo nga ginaserbisyohan ko. Pero mas palangga ko ang akun asawa kag ang akun gamay nga bata,” he added.

Though saddened by Jamora’s withdrawal, the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) supports Jamora’s decision.

Manuel Mejorada, spokesperson of Rommel Ynion, the mayoralty candidate of UNA party, said Jamora’s resignation could not paralyze the opposition group.

He noted that Jamora’s mere presence in the party will continue to help them win their battle.

He also likened Jamora’s decision to the declaration of Pope Benedict XVI to resign.

Mejorada noted that just like the Pope, Jamora showed humility to admit that he may not have the same capacity to serve the public.

Meanwhile, Comelec officer Jonathan Sayno clarified that Jamora could not have a substitute candidate since the deadline for the withdrawal and substitution of candidates was on December 21 last year. After the set date, only candidates who died or disqualified are allowed to be substituted.*
