Moments after his defeat to Timothy Bradley, Manny Pacquiao in a post fight press conference vowed to knock-out his American opponent in their rematch.
Pacquiao lost his WBO welterweight title to Bradley, Saturday (Sunday, PHL time) at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, with two judges giving him a 113-115 loss, while one had the reverse, a 115-113 win for the Sarangani congressman.
Pacquiao said he was "100 percent" confident he had won the 12-round fight.
"I didn't listen to the announcement because I thought I had won [verdicts from] all the judges," Filipino southpaw Pacquiao told reporters after ending an unbeaten run of 15 bouts.
"I respect the decision but 100 percent I believe I won the fight. I don't even remember if he hurt me one punch. He got me with a couple of jabs but I don't remember if he hit me a solid punch in my face.
"I give Bradley credit, maybe three rounds for him because in some rounds I relax. Aside from three rounds, every round I hurt him."
MIXED REACTIONS
Boxing fans all over the world have mixed reactions over Pacquiao's defeat and some even speculated that the fight was scripted to cater to a rematch this November.
'Pinoy Pride' was wounded over Pacquiao's defeat. Bradley must have touched a lot of egos, said Michael Tirador.
Alex Vidal, an Ilonggo journalist who covered many of Pacquio's bouts in Las Vegas, posted in his FB: "Ari ako sa atubang ni Bob Arum sa press conference. Pamatyagan ko daw naga-drama lang ang tawo nga ini. Plansado na ang rematch sa November 2, 2012. Daw gina-intu lang nila kita (I'm here in front of Bob Arum during the press conference. I feel that this is all an act. The rematch on November 2, 2012 has been ironed out. They made us look like fools)."
Vidal watched Pacman's bout in MGM Grand.
Glen Jumayao, a boxing fan from Leganes also shared the same sentiment: "Feeling ko, daw gin-negosyo naman sang Las Vegas para may pustahan ang tawo. Waay thrill kon magdaug si Pacquiao. Kon pierde si Pacquiao, may re-match, so negosyo. (I feel that this is another business of Las Vegas just so people can have something to bet on. They feel that if Pacquiao wins, there's no thrill anymore. But when he losses, there will be a re-match, so it's good business)."
Gabriel Bejemino Augosto, a freelance photographer, shares the same sentiment – that the Pacquiao-Bradley fight was just about business. He said that based on Pacquiao's stance during the first ten rounds, he could even knockout Bradley but played it safely.
"The sport (boxing) is all about money already," he added.
"I'm sick and tired of Pacquiao winning always. Wala na thrill. Besides, that would be a good test of humility for him to lose once in a while," said Kate Villa.
Meanwhile Allen Jardinazo, a TV station cameraman in Bacolod said that Pacquiao's performance yesterday was better compared to his game against Marquez. "I think he's not young anymore that's why he slowed down," he said.
Jardinazo however stressed that the Pacquiao-Bradley fight is comparable to a WWE (World Wrestling Entertainmen) game which for him, "everything is scripted."
Some netizens, meanwhile, also speculated that maybe Pacquiao is a party to the "conspiracy" and allowed it to happen.
Danilo R. Dela Cruz, a writer and translator, wondered what happened to Pacquio during the last rounds and posted in FB: "Bakit tumigil sa pag-atake si Manny sa mga huling rounds? Kung kailan kaya na niya pabagsakin si Bradley."
However, despite his loss, many Pacquiao-fanatics still believe that the Pinoy boxing icon remains a source of inspiration and deserves a rematch.
"Sa kabila ng pagkabigo ni Manny Pacquiao depensahan ang WBO welterweight belt laban kay Timothy Bradley, hindi pa rin natitinag ang suporta ng samabayanang Pilipino sa 'Pambansang Kamao'," said Abigal Valte, deputy presidential spokesperson.
Vice President Jejomar Binay said in a statement that "Manny fought hard and has shown he has the true heart of a champion. He remains a source of inspiration for the Filipino people."
The Armed Forces of the Philippines, which consistently provides soldiers free showing of Pacquiao's bouts, said Pacquiao, a reserve Lieutenant Colonel in the Philippine Army, continues to set an example with his courage and perseverance.
"Manny Pacquiao has done his best in the fight. Although it was not good enough, the courage and perseverance he showed was worth emulating," the AFP said on its Twitter account.
REMATCH
Meanwhile, Pacquiao expressed his readiness for a rematch against Bradley this November 10 in a venue yet to be decided.
"It will make me a warrior in having this kind of rematch," Pacquiao said, looking to avenge the loss. "I want to finish him before the whole 12 rounds. I want the rematch."
As early as May, Bradley was already preparing for a rematch against the Pinoy boxing icon. He even created mocked up posters and tickets for the said date.
To note, Bob Arum, CEO of Top Rank, which handles the promotion of both boxers, had a clause in Pacquiao's contract that should the Filipino ring icon fall, he would get first crack at Bradley again, before the two fighters seek other opponents.
Some fans welcome this news, and maintain that they are still proud of Pacquiao despite what happened.
Bevin, an expectant mother, said "Sports will never be the same these days without business and politics. We need a rematch. And we are waiting for Mayweather to say something about the fight. Let's see if this time he will be willing to fight with Pacquiao."
"After seeing the final punch stats, Pacquiao should have won that fight. Even celebrities (Miley Cyrus, Bruno Mars, Lady Gaga, among others) trended in twitter #MannyPacquiaoIsStillTheWorldsBestBoxer because they know Pacquiao deserves the belt," tweeted Arvin Tonogbanua.
"Both fighters did their best and wanted to win the fight. Unfortunately Pacquiao lost. We need to accept it. Manny did all he can to give glory to our country and in return, we should support him," said Kate Masa.
'TEMPORARY SETBACK'
Meanwhile, Bacolod City Mayor Evelio Leonardia, who witnessed the Pacquiao-Bradley fight in Las Vegas, said Pacquiao's defeat was "unbelievable."
"Manny was robbed of victory right before the eyes of millions. There was no way Bradley could have won that kind of fight. Even the statistics were clearly for Manny," Leonardia said in a press statement.
Leonardia, a close friend of Pacquiao who hoisted the Filipino fighter's championship belt in his previous fights, said that despite the loss, Pacquiao was "gracious, and, as always, a professional and a gentleman."
He said that after the fight, Pacquiao told family and friends who joined him in his locker "not to be sad because God has a bigger plan than our plans."
His reaction shows maturity, sportsmanship and statesmanship, Leonardia said.
"The atmosphere in the locker was not festive, it was not gloomy either because people know in their hearts that Manny actually won. It is merely a temporary setback," the Bacolod mayor said.
He added that Pacquiao has gotten even more sympathy and has become even more popular.
"The rematch is already anticipated. Meanwhile, the Manny Pacquiao legend lives on," Leonardia said.
ASHAMED OF BOXING
According to boxing news analysis at http://www.badlefthook.com, top rank promoter Bob Arum is upset when Timothy Bradley won a controversial split decision over Manny Pacquiao.
But, he's not worried about making money with the already essentially scheduled November 10 rematch between the fighters.
"This is nuts," Arum said. "People don't know what they're watching anymore. I'm going to make a lot of money (with a rematch). But who is going to take this sport seriously?"
Scott Christ, a sports analyst, said, "The Hall of Fame promoter is fielding a lot of heat -- some aren't really buying that he's upset, or even that he much cares at all. Some have compared his press conference 'performance' to that of a stand-up act more than an angry promoter who feels his fighter was truly wronged."*MAS/NLG/GMA News
