To answer the clamor of the La Paz Market Vendors Association, the City Council has approved the temporary extension of the routes of Leganes and Pavia jeepneys up to the La Paz Market to provide convenience to vendors and buyers.
Based on Regulation Ordinance 2012-440, the said jeepneys can pass by the La Paz Market from 5 a.m. to 10 a.m. starting Nov. 15 until Dec. 31, 2012.
Before, the said jeepneys loaded and unloaded at Huervana Street which is 200 meters away from the market. Thus, the vendors’ incomes were affected because the buyers felt inconvenienced.
Meanwhile, Iloilo City Traffic Management and Transportation Regulation Office (TMTRO) Head Joe Tengco said the new scheme is only an experiment to gauge the ordinance’s effectiveness in response to the association’s complaint.
The City Council will be the one to decide whether or not to adopt it permanently, he said.
Meanwhile, sari-sari store owner Lorna Corio is happy with this development because she can now easily carry her heavy goods. Before, she had to rent a pedicab to go to Huervana Street before she can ride a Leganes-bound jeep.*
