A financial assistance amounting to P612,455 is to be released to upgrade the seaweed production facility of the Sibunag Seaweeds Growers and Traders Association, Inc. (SSGTAI) based at Sibunag, Guimaras from the Department of Science and Technology Region 6 for its Grant-In-Aid (GIA) program.
The fund is intended for the acquisition of production equipment such as noodle machine with cutter, moisture analyzer, kneader, soap molder and other equipment needed for the improvement of product quality of dried and processed seaweeds.
The fisherfolk-members of SSGTAI have 275 members from the barangays of Alegria, Sabang, San Isidro, Bubog and Sebaste.
At present they are propagating a total coastal area of 50.75 hectares for which a production of 10 tons per month of seaweed (Eucheuma sp.) is yielded during peak months that starts at September and ends on April yearly.
Aside from seaweed production, the group is also engaged in processing of seaweed-based products.
The Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP) donated a building which serves as their bodega for post-harvest production and as seaweed processing center. Among the products that are processed are; seaweed pickles, crackers, and noodles. Seaweed bath soap is also produced.
DOST will also provide other technical services needed in the project implementation like technical trainings on improved processing technologies, moisture content determination, equipment operation, food safety, and other relevant activities.
The product presentation will also be enhanced through the execution of the developed packaging and label design.
The Provincial Government of Guimaras through its Provincial Economic Development Office and the Municipal Agriculture Office of Sibunag will directly supervise the implementation of the project.*
