Negros guv moves vs. illegal fishing, gambling
BACOLOD CITY – Negros Occidental Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. said he is forming a task force that will address illegal fishing in a southern town of Cauayan after fishermen in the area sought his intervention.
Marañon said there have been complaints of illegal fishing by large vessels in Cauayan and he has also asked the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources for assistance.
Ramon Gregas, vice chairman of the Cauayan Fisherfolk Federation, claimed that illegal fishing activities are ongoing in the past seven years now, but their municipal officials have done nothing about it.
A group of fishermen from 13 barangays in Cauayan, including Bulata, Caliling, Guilhungan, Ilijan, Inayawan, Isio, Linawon, Mambugsay, Man-uling, Masaling, Poblacion, Tiling and Tuyom, had informed Marañon that large purseiner vessels encroaching their municipal waters are affecting their livelihood.
Gregas said the catch of about 1,500 fishermen in these barangays have largely decreased and affected their income because of the illegal fishing activities.
He pointed out that purseiner boats from Hinigaran are fishing within four kilometers of the Cauayan shoreline which is a violation of the Municipal Fisheries Ordinance and the Philippine Fisheries Code.
Some purseiner boats are also illegally using “super lights” to attract fish.
Cauayan Vice Mayor Jerry Tabujara, however, dismissed the claims that illegal fishing is rampant in their municipality.
The Philippine Coast Guard and the Provincial Bantay Dagat should go after these large vessels, he added.
ILLEGAL GAMBLING
Meanwhile, Marañon said he is also directing the Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office to launch an all-out war against illegal gambling in northern Negros.
The governor said illegal gambling is rampant in the north because some government officials support these operations.
“Now that the elections are over, the police can concentrate in going after these illegal gambling activities,” Marañon said.
Senior Supt. Ricardo de la Paz, acting provincial police director, said he has also issued a directive to all police chiefs to sustain and strengthen their campaign against illegal gambling.
He acknowledged that illegal gambling operations have
“We have to focus on this since the elections are already finished. Admittedly, we have sort of neglected it because we wanted to make sure that the elections will be peaceful. Now, we will re-focus to our anti-criminality campaign,” De la Paz added.*
