The Municipal Engineer’s Office of Miag-ao town has ordered the stoppage of the construction of the multi-purpose building or commonly known as “Garinasium” inside the Miag-ao Central Elementary School after the project contractor and engineer have failed to secure a building permit from the municipality.
This was revealed in a letter sent by Engr. Diosdado Facon, building officer of the MEO, to the Iloilo Provincial Capitol’s Public Information Office, a copy of which was furnished The News Today.
The letter was addressed to contractor Edmar Lamida, ordering him to immediately stop all illegal building activities as it violates Section 301 of the National Building Code (P.D. 1096).
The letter was followed by another notice from the office of Mayor Julieta Flores reminding Lamida about the cease and desist order or notice of illegal construction issued by the MEO.
The Garinasium is a gift to the people of Miag-ao by Rep. Janette Garin, wife of Iloilo Vice Governor Richard Garin. It is one of the several existing gymnasiums in other towns donated by the Garin couple.
Meanwhile, Rep. Garin said she respects the views of Mayor Flores. “I do hope and pray that if indeed she did it per prodding of her husband, I do hope that she will let governance prevail over politics and allow Miag-ao to progress by being friendly to fund and project facilitators,” she said.
She added, “For the past years that I, together with the national government have been facilitating projects in the First District, it is only in the town of Miag-ao where we encounter problems and hassles in implementation of projects. Only in Miag-ao when some leaders seem to let politics prevail over the needs of their constituents. Let us not allow politics to impede the implementation of infra projects that the people of Miag-ao deserve,” she concluded.*
