Biodiversity Day in Western Visayas is ushered in by activities that highlight the importance of protecting, conserving and managing the region's marine life.
International Day of Biodiversity is on May 22, which carries the theme "Marine Biodiversity" celebrated together with the National Month of Ocean anchored on the theme "Buhay Dagat, Buhay Natin."
May was declared as National Ocean Month under Presidential Proclamation No. 57 signed by then President Joseph Estrada, in 1999.
The activities which started early this month yet, included a series of information dissemination events conducted by the Protected Areas, Wildlife and Coastal Zones Management Services of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.
DENR-6 Executive Director Julian Amador said their Provincial Environment and Natural Resources and Community ENROs have undergone a four-day training on Geographical Information System and Situational Analysis for Integrated Coastal Management.
Amador said the field implementers were updated on statistical analysis and database technology for the management of coasts and for its sustainability.
Amador said the region is rich in marine biodiversity as it is one of the top exporters of seafood products and other marine resources.
"These celebrations remind us how important marine life is and thus we should take steps that could enhance their sustainability," Amador said.
On the other hand, a dialogue to address the issues of persisting illegal activities at Nogas Island, considered as "Little Boracay Island of Anini-y, Antique will be conducted there on May 28.
Environment Secretary Ramon Paje, meanwhile, said the observance shows the direct correlation between marine life and human life that the survival of one depends on the other.*PIA
