Merio Sorsano, last-termer councilor of Barangay Lapayon in Leganes, Iloilo said he wants to extend the barangay election to 2015 because he still wants to serve his village.
Glenda Sologastoa of Zarraga, Iloilo also wants an extension, reasoning that a three-year term is not enough to materialize her plans for the village. But, if the election is pursued next year, she will cooperate.
Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Jessie Robredo said there are some barangay officials who want to extend the barangay election to 2015 but he advised them to contend with the law.
He added, however, that such extension would depend on Congress.
House Bill 6005 which seeks to reset the 2013 Barangay Elections to the last Monday of October 2015, instead of the October 2013, was already passed in Congress.
Iloilo city's lone district congressman Jerry Treñas is one of the supporters of this proposal.
Treñas said government could save funds as well as add two more years to the term of barangay officials so they can continue to implement their projects with minimal interference from politicians.
He added that if the government pushes through with the barangay election in October 2013, the continuity of village projects will be affected.
He said that the 2013 midterm elections is very partisan and divisive in nature that may affect the barangay elections, thus Congress must insulate the barangays from the influence of partisan politics.
Iloilo City has 180 villages and most of their projects are dependent on the support given by both local and national politicians.*
