The project which would be implemented through public-private partnership would require approximately some P130 to P135 million
The Parola Ferry Terminal Project will ensure a safe and convenient travel of passengers from Iloilo to Guimaras, said Philippine Ports Authority 6 manager Winfred Elizalde.
"Bancas with outrigger and rigger canoes numbering about 200 will also benefit from the project because they will have a comfortable home of their own where they can be accommodated as compared from their present situation," said Elizalde.
He said the development in the Parola area has been entrusted by the national government to the city government of Iloilo and to be supported by the PPA.
It can be recalled that the Iloilo City government has secured a Presidential Land Proclamation for the project site through Proclamation No. 207 signed by President Benigno Aquino on July 19, 2011.
The project intends to improve and modernize the Parola to cater to the needs of a growing number of daily commuters between Guimaras and Iloilo. It also seeks to enhance the tourism industry, a vital element of the economy in Western Visayas.
The scope of the project covers a main terminal building, a park catering to tourists and Iloilo City residents, commercial establishments inside the ferry terminal and in the Parola area premises, as well as a proposed multi-storey structure that will host a potential hypermart and retail outlets.
Based on the project profile prepared by the city government, the project which would be implemented through public-private partnership would require approximately some P130 to P135 million.
Elizalde said the Special Bids and Awards Committee had already looked into the provisions of the contracts of the constructors who joined the bidding.
Aside from increase in commuting traffic and tourist movements, the city government also expects an increase in economic activity and tax collection once the development in Parola is completed.*PIA
